Decorative leaded light window and W20 steel screens for new build
Introduction
Hawkscroft Ltd was commissioned by a private client to design and fabricate bespoke internal glazed screens and a decorative leaded light panel for a new build property in Stratford-upon-Avon. The project required specialist glazing solutions that would complement the contemporary design of the home.
Summary of work undertaken
The brief included the construction and installation of two fire-rated steel screens with double opening doors connecting the hallway to the ground-floor reception rooms. Hawkscroft proposed black-framed W20 steel screens, fairly open in their design, fitted with fire-rated glazing to meet building regulations. The scheme aimed to maximise a natural flow of light through the hallway and maintain clear sightlines throughout the space.
The client had originally contacted Hawkscroft with an image sourced online, seeking to recreate a specific leaded light design, within the larger glazing scheme. Working from the low-resolution image, Hawkscroft interpreted the concept and produced scaled drawings of a bespoke stained glass leaded light for client approval. The leaded light panel incorporated yellow and green glass elements with heart motifs, framed by a contrasting red border. This colourful panel was designed for an internal door, separating the entrance lobby and the main hallway.
Following design approval, Hawkscroft manufactured the coloured glass panel using traditional leaded light making techniques. Each glass pane was individually cut to size in order to mirror the agreed pattern and design.
Results
The project took approximately three months and was successfully completed on time and on budget. The stained glass leaded light panel creates a distinctive feature to the entrance of the house, adding colour and interest. The two W20 screens with double opening doors complement the stained glass leaded panel and blend seamlessly within the contemporary setting and high specification of this new build home.
The finished work successfully integrates traditional artisanry within the contemporary specification of this new build, meeting both the client's aesthetic requirements, and building regulation standards. On completion, the client expressed his satisfaction with the completed installation and the quality of workmanship delivered, which met all his expectations.
